Royal Ballet of Flanders Wins Prestigious Laurence Olivier Award for "Outstanding Achievement in Dance"
March, 2009 - The Royal Ballet of Flanders has won the coveted Laurence Olivier Award for "Outstanding Achievement in Dance" for its successful series of performances of "Impressing the Czar" at Sadler's Wells in London. The piece had also been nominated in the "Best New Dance Production" category by a jury composed of experts, selected for their knowledge and professional experience, as well as members of the audience.

Royal Ballet of Flanders Receives Two Nominations for Laurence Olivier Awards
ANTWERP – It’s another feather in the cap of the Royal Ballet of Flanders as the dance company is nominated twice
for the prestigious Laurence Olivier Awards. The winners are to be announced on Sunday 8 March 2009 at
Grosvenor House in London.
This is the first time that the Royal Ballet of Flanders is among the nominees for the Laurence Olivier Awards,
the most coveted theatre awards in the UK. The company earned a nomination for ‘Best New Dance Production’ for William Forsythe’s absolute masterpiece Impressing the Czar.
The Ballet of Flanders’ impressive classical and modern ballet productions have filled theatres in Belgium and abroad. Audiences around the world have been dazzled by the company’s talent and enthusiasm. In November 2008,
its exhilarating performances at Sadler’s Wells in London received rapturous praise, resulting in a nomination for ‘Outstanding Achievement in Dance’. Other nominees in this category are the Royal Ballet Company (Infra), and
Savion Glover, Marshall Davis Jr. and Maurice Chestnut (Bare Soundz).
The Laurence Olivier Awards are presented by the Society of London Theatre. The jury is composed of experts,
selected for their knowledge and professional experience, as well as theatregoers.
Later in the season, the Royal Ballet of Flanders’ Impressing the Czar will be travelling to Moscow and to Paris.

Vor 20 Jahren zeigte das Ballett Frankfurt William Forsythes “Impressing the Czar” im Schauspiel Frankfurt. Die Wiederkehr in der Einstudierung des Koningelijk Ballet van Vlaanderen wurde nun zum Triumph.
Das, sagt der Herr eine Reihe weiter hinten, laut vernehmlich trotz des ohrenbetäubenden Jubels, sei ja wohl als Backpfeife für die Politik zu verstehen: Wie sie den nur haben gehen lassen können? “Der” steht zwischen knapp vier Dutzend Tänzern, das Publikum hat sich von den Sitzen erhoben, um William Forsythe minutenlang zu applaudieren. Dabei ist es nicht sein einstiges Ballett Frankfurt, sondern das Koninklijk Ballet van Vlaanderen, das “Impressing the Czar” wieder nach Frankfurt bringt. Im Schauspiel sitzen einige der “Czar”-Tänzer von einst, viele Zuschauer, die das Ballett schon 1988 gesehen haben - und ebenso viele meist jüngere Leute, denen sich durch das Gastspiel eine Lücke schliesst.
