Reviews Swanlake

Swans Seize Stage

On the face of it, Marcia Haydée’s Swan Lake is a traditional interpretation of this classic ballet. But appearances can be deceptive, for Haydée, a ballet icon, reverses the traditional role patterns as the swans seize the stage in an unexpected coup. Swans, she explains, are snappy birds: they can attack in a flash...

Classic Goes Disney

How should a choreographer today approach a classic ballet that has, over the past 130 years, all but reached perfection? Perhaps by confronting the piece with a modern icon like Disney, as Marcia Haydée and the Royal Ballet of Flanders have done.

Impressing the Czar in Frankfurt

Goldene Kirschen

Frankfurter Algemeine |7/6/2008 | Eva-Maria Magel

La Scala Ballet and the Royal Ballet of Flanders in Sleeping Beauty

Marc Haegeman | The Dancing Times | 07-2007

...On May 16 Belgium's Royal Ballet of Flanders revived Marcia Haydée's version of The Sleeping Beauty at the Flemish Opera in Ghent. Flanders boasts neither the wealth nor manpower (only over 50 strong)of a company like La Scala, nor does it have a special performance tradition which ties it to this ballet. Yet the overall results were far more satisfactory, judging by the resonance the work seems to have with the dancers, who were in brilliant form and appeared strongly committed on every level...

"...For me, however, that evening's true saviours came in the form of the three guests from the Royal Ballet of Flanders: Altea Nuñez, Alain Honorez and Wim Vanlessen.  Together, they performed first the solo and the pas de deux from Forsythe's "In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated."  Mmm...It was phenomenal.  The first "real" moment of the night.
